Devotional Day 7:
Learning to say no
“She considers a field and buys it”
Proverbs 31:16
When we read about the Proverbs 31 woman, it’s easy to focus on everything she did.
She worked.
She served.
She provided.
She cared for her household.
She was productive and wise.
But have you ever noticed what she didn’t do?
She didn’t do everything.
She considered a field and bought it.
She made intentional decisions.
She chose wisely.
Which means she also said no.
And if I’m honest… this is something I struggle with deeply.
I have a very hard time saying no.
I am a people pleaser.
I don’t like disappointing others.
I want to help.
I want to show up.
I want to be dependable.
But sometimes my yes has come at the cost of my own peace.
Sometimes my yes has stretched me thin.
Sometimes my yes has meant saying no to my own family, my own rest,
or even my own time with God.
I am learning that not every opportunity is an assignment from the Lord.
The Proverbs 31 woman was not frantic.
She was focused.
She didn’t react to every request.
She considered.
She prayed.
She chose intentionally.
Somewhere along the way, many of us began believing that saying no is selfish.
So we overcommit.
We overextend.
We overexplain.
We carry things God never assigned to us.
But wisdom is not doing more.
Wisdom is doing what God has actually asked of you.
You cannot say yes to everything without saying no to something important.
And sometimes that “something important” is your peace.
Your family.
Your health.
Your calling.
Jesus Himself stepped away from crowds.
He did not meet every demand placed on Him.
If Jesus did not say yes to everything…
we don’t have to either.
I am still learning this.
Still asking God to help me pause before automatically saying yes.
Because obedience is not about pleasing people.
It’s about honoring God.
And sometimes obedience sounds like a gentle, confident no.
The Proverbs 31 woman built a legacy not because she did it all,
but because she did what mattered most.
So today, ask yourself:
Is this mine to carry?
Or is this something I can release?
Grace gives you permission to choose wisely.
Prayer
Lord, You know my heart. You know how hard it is for me to say no. Give me wisdom to discern what is mine to carry and what is not. Help me live focused, not frantic. Teach me to say yes to You first and trust that I don’t have to please everyone. Amen.
