Devotional Day 10:

Choosing joy

“The joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Nehemiah 8:10

Joy is not the same as happiness.

Happiness depends on circumstances.

Joy depends on Christ.

Happiness says, “Things are going well.”

Joy says, “God is still good.”

Some seasons make joy feel easy such as:

wedding days, answered prayers, healthy babies, big milestones.

But what about the ordinary days?

The messy house days.

The crying kids days.

The busy never ending days.

The waiting days.

The days when the prayer hasn’t been answered yet.

Real joy is not loud.

It doesn’t always look like laughter.

Sometimes it looks like quiet trust.

It looks like choosing gratitude when comparison creeps in.

It looks like praising before the breakthrough.

It looks like smiling at your children even when you’re tired.

It looks like worship in the middle of uncertainty.

Joy is a decision.

Not because everything is perfect,

but because God is present.

The enemy wants to steal your joy.

He whispers frustration.

He magnifies what’s missing.

He keeps your focus on what isn’t happening.

But Scripture tells us something powerful:

The joy of the Lord is your strength.

That means joy isn’t fragile.

It’s fuel to keep going.

It steadies you in motherhood.

It strengthens you in marriage.

It carries you in the waiting.

You don’t have to wait for life to feel perfect to experience joy.

You can find it in small, holy moments:

Sunlight through the kitchen window.

Little arms around your neck.

Tiny fingers holding your hand.

A quiet cup of coffee before the house wakes up.

A promise in Scripture that reminds you that God is still working.

Today, don’t let your joy be dependent on your circumstances.

Ask the Lord to anchor it in Him.

Because when your joy is rooted in Christ,

no season can steal it.

Prayer

Lord,

Thank You that my joy does not have to depend on what is happening around me.

Thank You that even when life feels heavy, You are still good.

Help me choose joy today.

When frustration rises, remind me of Your faithfulness.

When comparison creeps in, anchor me in gratitude.

When I feel weary, fill me with the strength that only comes from You.

Teach my heart to rejoice in the ordinary moments,

to see Your hand in the small blessings,

and to trust You in the waiting.

Let the joy of the Lord truly be my strength.

Amen.
